46th Day – Situation Update

Today marks 46th day of the ongoing protest by Madhesi front over Nepal’s new charter. 

Over 100 cargo vehicles enter Nepal from Bhairahawa

Over 100 vehicles carrying essential goods, including petroleum products, on Wednesday entered Nepal via Nepal-India border checkpoint of Belahiya, Bhairahawa.

The vehicles that entered Nepal via Belahiya checkpoint include 55 trucks laden with essential goods, six tankers carrying petroleum products, two bullets of cooking gas (LPG), five tankers with oxygen and 36 pick-up vans among others, according to Bhairahawa customs office.

The entry of vehicles, which were earlier blocked by Madhesi protesters, were allowed passage from Wednesday afternoon following a meeting of the security and customs officials of Nepal and India, which decided to ensure smooth entry of vehicles to Nepal from India.

Border blockade by Madhesi front on 7th consecutive day

The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) leaders and cadres have continued the blockade at the Nepal-India border checkpoints in different districts of the Tarai for the seventh consecutive day today.

The imports from India and other countries remain stuck in the eastern and western parts of Tarai including major checkpoints of Biratnagar-Jogbani, Gaur-Bairginiya, Jaleshwar-Bhittamod and Birgunj-Raxaul. A week-long blockade by Madhesi front has causes acute shortage of supplies especially of petroleum products across the country.
