Mahottari youths counter ‘Back off India’ with ‘Welcome India’

While youths from Kathmandu and some parts of the country were carrying out protest against the unofficial blockade imposed by India, over 500 youths from Mahottari on Tuesday staged demonstration in the district headquarters to counter the ‘Back off India’ movement with the slogan ‘Welcome India’.

One of the participants, Shivendra Chaudhary, a local youth, alleged that those staging protest against India have forgotten India’s support recently following the great earthquake.

Demonstrators expressed their dissatisfaction toward the government’s ill intention to promulgate the country’s constitution amid killings of innocent Madhesi people.

Kripa Shankar Sah, chief of Mahottari Chamber of Commerce and Industries, alleged that the three major parties incited the youths for staging demonstrations against India.”I am surprised to see Nepalis demonstrating against India for blockade when the Madhesi front cadres are blocking the Nepal-India border checkpoints,” he said.

Speaking during the occasion, the agitating leaders said that the constitution will not be acceptable to the Madhesis without addressing their genuine demands.

BRB visits Janakpur amid protests, asserts Nepal’s new charter fails to address Madhesi, Janajati, Tharu and other marginalised communities

Former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, who visited Janakpur amid protests on Tuesday, addressed the mass in Hindi and asserted that the new constitution has failed to address the demands of Madhesi, Janajati, Tharu and other marginalised communities.

“I tried my best to address the demands of Madhes but to no avail. Forgive me,” said the former Maoist leader. He termed the recently promulgated constitution as “an incomplete document” and added that the Maoist party had betrayed him along with the Madhesis, Tharus and Janajatis.

Border blockade by Madhesi front on 6th consecutive day

Agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) leaders and cadres have continued their blockade of the Nepal-India border checkpoints in different districts of the Tarai for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday.

The imports from India and other countries remain stuck in the eastern and western parts of Tarai including major checkpoints of Biratnagar-Jogbani, Gaur-Bairginiya, Jaleshwar-Bhittamod and Birgunj-Raxaul. The six-day-long blockade by Madhesi front has causes acute shortage of supplies especially of petroleum products across the country.

Madhesi front cadres pelt stones at Nepali security personnel from India after they chased them away

UDMF protesters staging protests from the Indian side of the border in Sunauli on Tuesday pelted stones at Nepali security personnel from Indian areas across Indo-Nepal border after police chased them away from the Nepali side, as reported in Republica.

There was tension between security personnel deployed at border and protesters after the formers stopped them from staging protest on the border. Hridayesh Tripathi, vice-chair of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party was in Sunauli to lead the protestors.

Madhesi front puts preconditions before Govt talks team to begin negotiations

  • Lift curfew at different places
  • Declare dead protesters as martyrs, and provide reparation to their families,
  • Provide free treatment to the injured, and
  • Drop cases against their cadres arrested during the protest
